Three Days in the Hochallgaeu on 23-25.06.2023

In June 2023, I was in the middle of writing my master's thesis when I spontaneously decided to spend a long weekend in the Allgäu region. The previous months had been characterized by a lot of work and long days in the office, which meant that I had already made very good progress with my master's thesis. So I wanted to recharge my batteries and decided to go on a three-day hike in the Hochallgäu region. The plan was to spend the night at the Kemptner Hütte and the Edmund-Probst-Haus, returning to Oberstdorf on the third day.

On the first day, I took the train from Nuremberg via Munich to Oberstdorf. From there, I took a detour via the Kegelkopf (1959m) to the Kemptner Hut (1846m).

Valley View on the way to Kegelkopf

The original plan was to cross the Kegelkopf, but this proved too dangerous without climbing equipment. So we retraced our steps and continued on to the Kemptner Hut. The gorge just before the hut was still covered in snow and in some places we had to walk under snow overhangs.

I spent the evening with the teachers of a school class who were crossing the Alps with their seventh-grade pupils (impressive!).

The second day started at 6 a.m. The destination was the Edmund Probst House (1932m) via the Fürschießersattel (2206m), Marchsattel (2201 m), Kreuzeck (2376m), Jochspitz (2232m) and Laufbacher Eck Sattel (2128m). However, this route was already blocked by a wall of snow at the Fürschießersattel, so I had to turn back and find an alternative route.

So, back to the Kepmtner Hut, on into the valley and then via Gerstruben to the Dietersbacher Alpe (1326m) and up to the Älpelesattel (1772m). From there, descend into the Oytal valley, past the Käseralpe (1403m) to the foot of the Gleitweg.

At the end of the Gleitweg, the trail leads past the spectacularly situated Seeaplsee lake and over the Zeigersattel (1922m) to the Edmund Probst House (1932m).

On the third day, we just headed back to Oberstdorf to catch the train back to Nuremberg.
