Winter Hike in the Rofan Range 23-25.02.2025
My friend Thomas and I went on a winter hike in the Rofan Range in Tyrol from 23-25.02.2025. Both nights were spent at the Erfurter Hut, which luckily is opened during winter season due to the local ski resort.
The first day we hiked from the parking lot at the entrance of the valley to the Erfurter Hut. This was a rather easy hike with some nice views of village and Achensee.
We spend the afternoon at the hut and enjoying the view and planning the coming two days.
The second day started with a beautiful sunrise and wonderful weather ahead.
The first peak of the day was the Gschollkopf, which is an easy hike from the hut and a great starting point to get an overview of the region. We confirmed our plan for the day by spotting the peaks we wanted to reach, in the image below from left to right: Spieljoch, Seekarlspitze, and Rofanspitze.
After a short breakfast we started the ascent to the Spieljoch.
The regular route was blocked due to the snowy conditions, which is why we chose a more direct route up a steep slope. The snow was very deep and we had to break trail, which was very exhausting.
From the top of the Spieljoch, we headed down the other side to the Seekarlspitze.
From the Seekarlspitze, we continued to the Rofanspitze, which was an easy hike through the valley between the two peaks.
From the Rofanspitze, we headed back the regular route through the valley to the hut. The way back was easier than the previous routes because the way was more frequently used and therefore more compacted.
Back on the hut, we welcomed a drink and a warm meal.
On the third day, we started the hike back to the parking lot by following the Heinrich-Huber-Steig. The beginning of the hike follows some beautiful forest trails.
The latter part was a quite exhausting hike because the trail was very steep, the snow was deep and the route not frequently used, thus we had to break trail. We stooped by the Ebner Joch for a short break and to enjoy the view. One can even see the Großvenediger in the distance, marked in the image below.
This peak also provides a great view of the Achensee and the surrounding mountains.
After this stop we continued the descent to the parking lot, which was an easy hike through the forest and passing the Astenau farm.
